The Psychology of Male Hair Loss

Even though hair loss is common and becomes more likely to occur as we age, that doesn’t prevent it from negatively impacting us mentally and emotionally. The negative psychological impact caused by suffering hair loss can often manifest in the form of embarrassment, frustration, and jealousy. These feelings and emotions could transform into more serious conditions including depression, stress, and becoming socially withdrawn – which could impact day-to-day life at home and at work.

Our mental health is important, and understanding the impact hair loss can have on our mental health can help those affected.

What Does It Mean When a Man Loses Hair?

Losing hair for most men is viewed as a sign of aging poorly. It can lower one’s confidence and sense of self-worth. For many men, they feel as if this makes them less physically attractive in a way that can affect their ability to date or be as appreciated by their partner. They also feel like being bald can impact their career prospects as they are overlooked by their non-bald co-workers. While some of these situations can be of our own making, there is no question that men overall feel more confident with a full, healthy head of hair.

What Mental Illness Makes Your Hair Fall Out?

There are three types of hair loss that are related to high levels of stress, including one that is a form of mental illness. Telogen effluvium is a form of hair loss that is caused by significant levels of stress. These high levels of stress cause a significant number of hair follicles to enter into the resting phase prematurely, resulting in excessive shedding leading to visible hair thinning and loss.

Another form of hair loss attributed to excessive stress is alopecia areata. Rather than stress being linked to pushing hair follicles into the resting phase, alopecia areata is caused by the body’s immune system attacking the hair follicles. This can result in more patchy hair loss.

Lastly, trichotillomania is a disorder in which someone suffers the irresistible urge to pull out their hair, whether it be on their scalp or another part of their body. This particular mental illness manifests as a way to cope with negative feelings and can be treated with proper care.

Is Hair Loss from Stress Permanent?

Hair loss related to stress does not have to be permanent. If the stress that is causing the hair loss is addressed (in the case of telogen effluvium) in a timely manner, the hair will very often grow back in time. In the case of trichotillomania, there is a risk of the hair follicles becoming damaged and lowering the chances of regrowth, increasing if hair from the same follicles is being pulled out multiple times.
